Black Tri English Bulldog Picture
Tri Colored English Bulldogs come in Black tri & Blue tri, both are AKC registered colors (blue is registered as gray). Black Tri English Bulldogs are a very rare yet very old color. Bulldogs came in black & white & Black tri since the breed first started long before the 1800s . The English Bulldog breed of today was originally bred from various breeds Mastiffs, Burgos Mastiff (which comes in black & black tri colors, pugs(come in black), Bandogges(which come in black, tri & blue colors) & largely Spanish Bulldogs (which come in black & tri black colors). After the English bulldog breed was outlawed for bullbaiting in 1835 the breed came near extinction until it was saved by soon to be exhibitor breeders that had a love for the English Bulldog breed. This is how the Bulldog turned from a fighting, working dog to a companion & show dog. The first Bulldog breed standard was written in London year 1879. When the British Bulldog very first became a show dog many show bulldogs came in black or black & white, some Bulldogs were called Black-Backed because they were completely blackish. Eventually it was written in the Bulldog breed standard that solid black was undesirable, but not so objectionable if occurring to a moderate degree in piebald patches. (Note that black color is not a disqualification). Coat color only counts for 4pts out of 100 points in the AKC Bulldog breed standard.
The reason black & black tri bulldogs are rarely seen now even though this color was largely behind the creation of the English Bulldog breed is because black was written in the Bulldog breed standard as undesirable. As a result many decades ago show English Bulldog breeders started working to avoid black colors in their breeding Black English Bulldog black tri english bulldog puppiesprogram. Thus black bulldogs, black tri bulldogs & blue tri English Bulldogs are very rare today. These colors do still randomly pop up in even prestigious long standing Champion show English Bulldog bloodlines.
These colors of Bulldogs have become more popular in recent years. For someone looking to purchase a black, black & white, black tri or blue tri colored bulldog this can be very difficult for a number of reasons. Because the black color is so rare now obviously it is hard to find. Also even though it is considered undesirable it is still a very, very expensive color if it presents itsself on a high quality Bulldog due to the rareness of the color. Still yet the biggest challenge would be finding a reputable breeder. Most breeders breeding black bulldogs are doing so to make money off of the rareness of this color rather than putting quality first. There are a few reputable show English Bulldog breeders that have decided to breed very high quality Black tri & Blue tri English Bulldogs because of their personal love for these colors. These Bulldog breeders are rare, largely because they are subject to criticism among their peers.
On the positive note black English bulldogs seem to be very healthy and have minimal skin or immune system issues.
